Take in an antiques sale today,
then buy a Lace Museum ornament
By Steven Wayne Yvaska
The last antiques show in the South Bay before the holidays happens from 9 a.m. to
4 p.m. today at Princeton Plaza.
Promoter Nada Kennon has gathered a mixed group of about 30 vendors for her Holiday
Fair. The show may be best known for its jewelry dealers, but expect other offerings
such as linens, glass, sports cards and paper. There also will be live music and
assorted arts and crafts items.
I'll be on hand between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. for verbal estimates of family heirlooms
or your recently discovered treasures. Cost: $10 for the first item, $5 for each
additional object.
Princeton Plaza is at the intersection of Blossom Hill Road, Kooser Road and Meridian
Avenue in San Jose. Details: (408) 761-6913.
GLASS WITH CLASS: Over the years, the Lace Museum in Sunnyvale has become recognized
for the distinctive wares its volunteers create using time-honored craftsmanship.
The prettiest are the avidly collected, lace-covered Christmas ornaments.
Glass orbs in a variety of sizes are fitted with pieces of vintage or contemporary
lace, made just once a year. Collectors place them on the tree or in a cut-glass
bowl used as a centerpiece. Price: $5-$50.
The sale runs through Dec. 24 at the Lace Museum, 552 S. Murphy Ave., Sunnyvale.
Details: (408) 730-4695.
If your gift recipients prefer something contemporary, I suggest you look over the
glass ornaments, trees and other creations impresario Tom Stanton and his associates
whip up at Holy City Glass.
The glass studio, just a few miles outside Los Gatos off Highway 17, is not far from
several Christmas tree farms. Some people get their tree, then head to Holy City
for some fine bulbs and decorations. Price: $23-$85. Details: (408) 353-4426.
LAST-MINUTE SHOPPING: I've already told you Silverleaf Antiques is going out of business,
but the shop now will close Dec. 24.
Many of the dealers in the collective have made further reductions on already marked-down
goods. Sounds as if Santa will save a penny or two this holiday season.
Silverleaf Antiques is at 2253 Lincoln Ave. in the Willow Glen part of San Jose.
Details: (408) 264-5900.
And if you find yourself in the East Bay, make a point of
going to Olde Towne Antiques Mall in Pleasanton. The emporium boasts 10,000 square
feet and nearly 100 dealer spaces. You'll surely find something amid the vast inventory
to satisfy the antiques guru. I got a piece of sterling silver for a friend that
will send him into orbit!
The mall, just outside the charming downtown area at 3440 Stanley Blvd., is open
daily 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Details: (925) 484-2446, or visit www.oldetowneantiquesmall.com.
A HOLIDAY TIP: If you're having trouble getting into a festive mindset,
or need a few decorating ideas, swing over to George Davis Interior Design and Fine
Period Antiques in Los Gatos.
The gregarious owner, New Orleans native George Davis, most recently inspired a legion
of admirers at the Summit League's fundraiser house tour. His charming shop at 35
W. Main St. is an extension of the rich and elegant settings evocative of Southern
hospitality. In these surroundings, you know there's no place like home for the holidays.
